is this course for you?

This course is ideal for you if you:

  • Want to design shoes in 3D in a fast way without a steep learning curve
  • Need to create quick prototypes of lasts, soles or full shoes
  • Want to materialize your ideas just to test them, before you 3D model them in great detail

You do not need any prior knowledge of AI or 3D, but we do expect that you are a footwear professional and understand footwear.

3D design in AI does have its limitations. In this workshop we will teach you what these are before you start creating your design. It is fully possible to make wearable shoes, as long as you follow the guidelines that we will give you.

If you want to 3D print your design, then you will need to have a suitable 3D printer and the right materials. We will give each participant personal advice depending on their needs and options. We will help you with the right settings, but you will need to print your own design on your own printer. We cannot print for you.

workshop format and requirements

This is a live class, given on two consecutive Sundays, at a time slot that allows many time zones to join. The classes and you will have access to the recordings for 1 year.

In the first class you will learn how to best design for FDM printing, how to avoid major pitfalls, how to visualize your ideas in 2D and 3D with AI and how to generate a shoe last, if needed. You will start your design in class, but have a week to finalize it before class 2.

In the second class you will learn how to subtract the last from your 3D model to make it wearable and in the right proportions. If you want you can add textures. Then you will learn how to slice it in Bambu Studio, since this is suitable (free) slicing software for beginners.
